Nyamagabe: VUP Umurenge improves residents’ welfare
Residents of Nyamagabe District say that Umurenge Vision 2020 Program (VUP) has improved their living conditions.
The Vice mayor for social affairs in Nyamagabe District, Emile Byiringiro said in a meeting with residents last week that locals have been employed in different areas of the district as a way of improving their social welfare.
According to the programme, over 3000 out of 4500 residents have been employed
“Residents were given job opportunities so that they get paid and be able to provide for their needs. The activities involved building schools, constructing roads and creating terraces.”
Ruth Mukamugema, one of the VUP beneficiaries testifies that her job enables her to save money in her association, providing for her family in addition to acquiring livestock.
“VUP gave me a job. I can now afford good clothes and I’m planning to buy a goat” She explains.
Vision 2020 Umurenge Programme (VUP) is an Initiative by the government of Rwanda aiming at eradicating extreme poverty by 2020.
The programme employs poor residents and carries out Public Works program in nine sectors of Nyamagabe District.
It is planned that in 2013-2014 performance contract, Rwf450 million will be allocated to public works program. Over Rwf250 million have already been used in VUP.
